About us

ZIPPA is short for Zambia Institute for Public Policy Analysis - a bit of a mouthful! Economic development, certainly, and also social development, for each depends on the other. And they must work together in order to attain ZIPPA’s vision for Zambia of ‘A vibrant national economy, leading to continuous improvement in the country’s Human Development Index’.

How can this be done?

That is stated in our mission, ‘To promote wider appreciation of the key role of free markets and competition in economic development’. Freedom is central: freedom to learn, freedom to innovate, freedom to compete, freedom to achieve our dreams, whatever they are, so long as they do not harm our fellow human beings.

The Economic Freedom of the World Network, which ZIPPA represents in Zambia, publishes each year a report which demonstrates that a country’s prosperity depends closely on the level of economic freedom enjoyed by its people. The Network bases this claim on detailed research into facts and figures. That is their method, and our method.

Prophesies, plans, promises, good intentions are not enough. It is fine to announce, as Mao did, that one’s aim is to ‘serve the people’. His way of doing that caused millions to die from hunger. The motto of his successor, Deng Xiaoping, was ‘Truth from facts’. That is the practical way, and it is ZIPPA’s way, to observe what works, to learn from it, and to advocate it. It is the dependable way to achieve Zambia’s development.
